Control is a way to manage anxiety, a way to project our internal anxieties into external settings such as work and relationships.
This includes micromanagement, rejecting difference, wanting guarantees, over-explaining, over planning, struggling to be present, struggling to let things unfold and so on.
Control stifles outcomes and often limits the potential of a team, career, work or relationship as they can not expand beyond the point of control for the anxious one.
We all have anxieties and whether we over intervene or under intervene, its imperative that in leadership roles we understand what is our anxiety and what is adequate for the situation at hand.
